He changed the whole format of how a p2p application works. In a traditional application, a downloader will download the file from only one other user. In BitTorrent when someone downloads a file it is being downloaded, it is being downloaded from several users. It takes pieces of the file from each user allowing download speed to increase a ton. This is great for swapping large files like movies, shows, or video games. It allows users to download these kinds of files almost 3 times faster. The article mentioned using BitTorrent also to fuel the TV industry, allowing users to download shows instantly, instead of waiting weekly for they're favorite show. I don't really think that will ever happen, because first of all the TV industry needs money to stay alive. If TV shows were broadcasted on the internet in any way, people will find a way very quickly to make it free for them to watch. Which means death to a lot of TV shows. As it even said in the article some shows like the Sopranos require lots of money to operate. Also a lot of shows would loose interest fairly fast, I think keeping space in a season allows for viewers to keep their interest. If you saw a whole entire season in one day, by the time the next season is released you might not care as much, or even remember it.

I do think it is a very usefull and unique program, and it was made with high intelligence. Faster downloads is always a plus in the internet world. This could open up doors for renting/buying movies. Kind of like itunes music store, you could dowload whole movies. They kind of already have that, but Im sure this guy could make it better.

startup.com

I thought it was a great movie, I never realized how much work and effort it took into making a buinsess on the internet. The movie was also very well done. I liked the way they made it, it was a straight up documentary, there was no bullshit. Sometimes its better when they don't have the one on one interveiws because then you know its all real. A lot of television companies manipulate one on one interveiws to make it seem like they ment one thing when they really ment another. So it was great how it was just pure footage of their day to day work life. I kind of wish they went more into what their website did and how it worked, I didn't really get how they were going to make any money off of what they were doing. And I wanted to know how you would set up a website to work like that. I also would have liked to know what they spent their money on. I didn't get why you would need to spend millions of dollars on a website to make it work.
The guys two guys that started govworks.com seemed very motivated, the documentary gave me the impression that they had been planning this whole company for a good part of their life. It got kind of crazy towards the end of the movie though, they kind of broke apart, and it seemed like the break of them was the break of the company as well. It really got kind of ridiculous, i mean, he had a security gaurd be prepared for a gunman when they fired Tom. That I found ammusing, did he really think his best friend was going to come in and shoot everyone up just because he was fired?

Overall it was really good. I didn't learn as much as I wanted to about internet business, but I learned a lot. I had no idea it took that much just to make a website work like that. I always had this idea in my head that websites like ebay, and amazon were just put up by one or two people and it exploded into something huge.

Namey mcnames

I thought this article was pretty interesting. I never really thought of companies and people sueing other companies just because of their name. And I find it kind of funny, because its kind of silly in most cases. I've thought of it happening before though. Eventually we will run out of clever domain names for websites. There really aren't that many. I first thought of this when I was trying to come up with a name for my band. Everytime we thought of a name, we turned around and found out that it was already taken by someone else. Many bands have run into this issue far into their carrer, and are forced to make minor changes to their name. For example Nirvana, there is a band from the U.K with the same name, but they were less popular, forcing them to become Nirvana U.K.
This situation just forces us to be more creative when choosing names for things. Or just make up new words that sound fun, like "GOOGLE" and "YAHOO". Names like these are great because when you mention it, theres only one thing you think of.

the Cory guy

To be honest I didn't get this talk thing to much. They are calling it E-business. Many different businesses have found profit through the internet, and many companies are finding different ways to make their money through the internet. I think this is a good thing, but at the same time kind of a bad thing. Making money in everyway is great, its the american dream. But an internet company doesn't always require lots of employee's so in a sense it could damage the economy because the more business that move completely online the more people are getting laid off.
Although the companies that are forming are creating great things. Like netflix, getting movies with out leaving your home. This is great if your an older person who can't drive, but at the same time it encourages our future to be even lazier than it is now.

Article on Piracy

I thought it was an interesting article and it was a new way of looking at "Music Piracy" I don't know if I would agree with exactally everything he is saying. Because publishing books and releasing records are two differen't things. They are similar, but not similar enough to compare if it will damage the buisness. I do think piracy will hurt the music buisness, actually it's fact that it has hurt the music buisness. He also compared music to movies, which I also dis-agreed with, because I don't think Pirated movies are at a high enough quality yet to be hurting the business. I think a lot of people would rather have a real copy of a movie then a movie that lags, and is pixelated.
I did agree with some of the stuff he was saying though. I do think p2p can help business with certain things if used correctly. but not everyone uses p2p like his daughter does. especially now with ipods becoming so huge, its becoming less and less nessicary to buy CD's.

first day of bloggin in CSI 110

Today, I ate a super taco, it was delicious.
